John W. Thompson, CEO of Symantec to Keynote Awards Banquet

Chicago -  John W. Thompson will deliver the keynote address at the BDPA National Conference in Chicago this August. In a telephone interview, he emphasized his risk tasking philosophy in advance of his Conference keynote.

"We must take a clear look at economic data around the world," he said. "The U.S. Economy is the strongest in the world, and Information Technology businesses and factories must recognize their role in global competitiveness, while continuing to foster and reinforce our own competitiveness."

Truly, a cornerstone of Thompson's philosophy surrounds preparation and risk taking. It's a subject he is passionate about and is almost certain to be a central theme to his keynote.

"We must be willing to take risks and be well prepared," he said. "Bill Gates took a huge risk and now he's the richest man in the world. Scott McNealy took one. Look where he is now. We must make sure we are as willing to take those risks."

If there is no risk, there is no reward, Thompson said. Even in the toughest of economic times there are still hundreds, even thousands of jobs if applicants are well prepared.

John W. Thompson is chairman of the board of directors, president and chief executive officer of Symantec Corporation. Since joining Symantec in April 1999, Thompson has led the transformation of the company from a software publisher to a leader in Internet security solutions for individuals and enterprises.

Tickets for the banquet are $75 per person and may be purchased at the registration booth.

The full John W. Thompson interview is available online at http://www.bdpajournal.org/upclosthompson.htm by Christopher A. Williams and Catherine S. Williams
